Job Tasks, Time Allocation, and Wages∗

چکیده
This paper studies wage determination using the first longitudinal dataset containing joblevel task information for individual workers. Novel quantitative task measures detail the amount of time spent performing People, Information, and Objects tasks at different skill levels. These measures suggest natural proxies for on-the-job human capital accumulation and provide new insights about wage determination. Current job tasks are quantitatively important, with high skilled tasks being paid double the rate of low skilled tasks. There is no evidence of learning-by-doing for low skilled tasks, but strong evidence for high skilled tasks. Current and past high skilled information tasks are particularly valuable. ∗We would like to thank seminar participants at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, Washington University in St. Louis, the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, McMaster University, Temple University, the Society of Labor Economists Annual Meeting, and the Southern Economic Association Annual Meeting for helpful comments. Wage Dispersion and Allocation of Jobs
This paper use Swedish establishment-level panel data on job turnover and wages to test the hypothesis of a positive relation between job reallocation and degree of wage compression as proposed by Bertola & Rogerson (1997). The effect of wage dispersion on job turnover is negative and significant in the manufacturing sector. The wage compression effect is stronger on job destruction than on job...
متن کاملCycle Time Reduction and Runtime Rebalancing by Reallocating Dependent Tasks
Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) is a complex information system that provides designing, administrating, and improving the business processes. Task allocation to human resources is one of the most important issues which should be managed more efficiently in BPMS. Task allocation algorithms are defined in order to meet the various policies of organizations. The most important of these...
متن کاملSpeculation-aware Resource Allocation for Cluster Schedulers
Resource allocation and straggler mitigation (via “speculative” copies) are two key building blocks for analytics frameworks. Today, the two solutions are largely decoupled from each other, losing the opportunities of joint optimization. Resource allocation across jobs assumes that each job runs a fixed set of tasks, ignoring their need to dynamically run speculative copies for stragglers. Cons...
متن کاملCycle Time Optimization of Processes Using an Entropy-Based Learning for Task Allocation
Cycle time optimization could be one of the great challenges in business process management. Although there is much research on this subject, task similarities have been paid little attention. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to optimize cycle time by minimizing entropy of work lists in resource allocation while keeping workloads balanced. The idea of the entropy of work lists comes fr...
متن کاملCommunication and cooling aware job allocation in data centers for communication-intensive workloads
Energy consumption is an increasingly important concern in data centers. Today, nearly half of the energy in data centers is consumed by the cooling infrastructure. Existing policies on thermally-aware workload allocation do not consider applications that include many tasks (or threads) running on a large set of nodes with significant communication among the tasks. Such jobs, however, constitut...
